Press Release: Gifting of 50,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines from India to Cote d’ivoire

India gifted 50,000 doses of Made in India Covid-19 vaccine (Covishield) to the people & Government of Cote d'Ivoire today to meet the immediate requirements of vaccinating healthcare workers, frontline workers and those with co-morbidities. In addition to the doses gifted today, Indian manufactured vaccines are also being supplied to Cote d'Ivoire under COVAX facility, the first batch of which has already arrived in Cote d'Ivoire.

The 50,000 consignment of vaccine was handed over by Ambassador Sailas Thangal to the Director of Cabinet of Ministry of Health & Public Hygiene and Director General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Speaking during the handing over ceremony Ambassador Thangal highlighted Prime Minister Modi's visionary leadership and his commitment that India’s capacity to manufacture vaccines would be used to combat COVID-19 for entire humanity. He further stated that the supply of vaccines is a celebration of India-Cote d'Ivoire friendship and cooperation and reassured that India stands with Cote d'Ivoire in the fight against this pandemic. Amb. Thangal also underscored that India is part of the solution to free the world from this dangerous pandemic.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health & Public Hygiene, Prof. Joseph Acka, Director of Cabinet thanked the Government of India and Ambassador for this kind gesture of the Government of India. He further stated that vaccines would help Cote d'Ivoire in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic.

While inaugurating the world’s largest vaccination drive in India on January 16, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that India’s vaccine and its production capability must be used for the best interest of the people across the globe.

India has been playing a major role in the global vaccine supply chain and has supplied more than 46 million vaccines to more than 48 countries including gifting of 1 million doses of vaccine to African countries. India is also committed to supply sufficient number of medicines to the United Nations under the COVAX facility. While supplying COVID-19 vaccine doses to other countries, India is also running its largest vaccine drive since January 16 with over 16.3 Million doses administered to its population till date. India has approved two COVID-19 vaccines - AstraZeneca [Covishield] and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin.
